1. Directories will give you one way link. One way link will help you boost your rankings in SERPs.
2. Directories will boost your Google Page rank.
3. Directories will give you traffic. This applies only to popular directories.

What are to be avoided in submitting to directories?

1. Don’t use reciprocals when submitting to directories. The reason for these is if the directories turned into link farm your site will not be penalize by Search Engines.

2. Don’t submit to Directories that are not serious about their directories because you’re just wasting your time if you will submit 20 links in that directory but you will get ignored or the directory won’t go anywhere after few months or a year.

What does SEO friendly directory means?

It means that your link from that directories are simply plain URL. No redirects or some crappy codes in the URL if you click your link in their site. Also I highly recommend that you submit your site from directories with SEO friendly URL i.e. www.directory.com/business , www.directory.com/sports/tennis
